You ever see a game title and just from how weird it sounds want to play it? That’s me with this one. A game touting itself as an open world comedy adventure where the inhabitants are stock photos of dogs, with you and your partner being the last two humans alive in the galaxy. Just as well that you are partners, then. Would have been an entirely different game had you been hunting each other down for murder.
However, with this story, you’re lovers. The two of you set to exploring the galaxy for one last time before your girl goes off on an inter-dimensional journey as part of the space program she works for. You’ll travel around through the use of airports, visiting the next destination you both agreed on, and being one step closer to that final parting.
But this being an open world game, you don’t need to be heading for that destination right away. Take some time to explore these weird alien locales, meet the residents and shop owners around. Some have stories to tell, while others will want something from you. The side quests are simple affairs where you’ll need to find what the dog is asking for and give it to them, usually from one of the shops.
Those are all entirely optional, there if you want to explore more of this world. What is not optional are the quests for every time you want to take a flight. Whenever you want to take a flight, you’ll need to get a boarding pass (or fifty) from one of the ticket dogs. Once you have that pass, you’ll need to find the correct terminal to use. If it’s not close to boarding time, while away the hours drinking a coffee or sleeping with a bed until it opens. Hand the boarding pass to one dog, and find out what their associate wants.
Built along the same idea of fetch quests, the associate to the boarding dog will require something before you are allowed to board. This is where you’ll need to search for the right shop to get the item needed. These shops feature everything that an airport would usually hold. Drinks, food, clothes, emergency, among other weirder things such as magic wands and skateboards. Once you have that item, head back to give it to them and board through the teleporter that opens.
These quests make up the bulk of the game, so if you find such questing repetitive and boring, this might not be the game for you. Since you’ll be travelling around a lot. Even if just following the main story. You’ll get a conversation with your partner, who will then move on to the next location. Sometimes you’ll be able to go directly there from where you currently are, but other times you’ll be heading to multiple locations to reach the end destination.
Being a comedy game, the writing obviously will be subjective. Not everyone will find it funny. The main story relaxes on the jokes, but still with a bit of humour within it. Everything else goes full-on with the absurdist comedy, such as a dog who will hand you a human heart as part of a pick-up line. There’s a lot of humorous stuff here, but to find all of it, there’s a lot of travelling to be done. And when you do find it, there’s every possibility you might not find it funny.
There’s a lot more to it than I was expecting, with a lot of side quests to find and complete. The art style might seem basic, but it works for what the game is presenting with its tone. Each planet you visit looks visually distinct from all others, with some nice calming background music that further pushes that unique personality each of them have. For those who want a bit of a comedic adventure, there’s some laughs guaranteed here, and overall a good adventure game for others.
