When first heading into this year’s Summer Game Fest, the one thing I didn’t expect was to have something from each of my core franchises shown at the event. Well, core adjacent with Palworld. Sonic was expected, as Sega seem to pushing the blue blur to new highs. Palworld was already confirmed to be here. The showing of Star Wars Outlaws was mostly a tease for Ubisoft Forward. But Power Rangers?

I would never have expected it. It’s been five years since Battle For The Grid arrived, with nothing in the video game space for the Rangers since. On consoles, at least. I fully expected mobile to be where the franchise would stay, considering the latest mobile release was this year. But, here we are. A new retro-styled game that is taking the what-if approach to its story.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rita’s Rewind is answering the question of what if Robo Rita succeeded. If the present day Rangers from Once and Always were unable to stop her from going back in time to when the original team was formed. Robo Rita would potentially be a big help to her past self. As such, this beat-em-up will feature many enemies from across Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, with events differing from the series.

Dino zord power is fully realised in Rita's Rewind, showing a level in a desert where the red tyrannosaurus zord chases after a flying Eye Guy, who is firing lasers.

Rita’s Rewind isn’t just delivering on-foot action, either. The bikes are seen to be in use. The Rangers fight flying enemies while on a rollercoaster. And the zords get to show what they’re made of, rather than immediately forming the megazord. Of course, there are megazord fights, too. In first-person, no less. This is a fantastic surprise to have been revealed. I cannot wait to get stuck in. Whenever that might be with its late 2024 date.

It’s been a while since I was last on Palworld, but this update is likely to bring me back. New location to explore! This Japanese inspired island looks beautiful with its cherry blossom trees and lantern-adorned buildings. Further afield are swamps and bamboo groves. It’s looking more varied than anything seen in the base game locations, which is pretty exciting.

Even more so with new Pals to encounter. Frog-looking ones, dark spectres, even a possessed chest. Old Pals seem to be getting more variety with new subspecies. Old favourites coming in new colours with new typing? I’m down for that. Building seems to be getting expanded, too. So hopefully there’s no more frustrations with that. The update comes at the end of this month, on 27/June.

Ah, Sonic x Shadow Generations. I loved the original game so much that I eventually owned it on all the platforms it released for. Now, with a second adventure added to it that focuses on going back through Shadow’s past, I’ve been wondering what stages will return. Kingdom Valley from Sonic 06 being there is just lovely, as I always loved the aesthetic of it. And Rail Canyon from Sonic Heroes is also a welcome sight.

Shadow the Hedgehog grinds on a rail of Rail Canyon, escaping from a horned train that is chasing him.

The end of the trailer showed the Digital Deluxe edition, which confirms a few things. Skins are a thing in this remaster of Generations, with a Terios one shown for Sonic (and an Adventure one for pre-ordering). Shadow will also be getting a skin, plus an extra level, in what seems to be a bonus bit of DLC for the game. I do have to wonder what other extra things might be coming for Sonic x Shadow Generations. Just waiting on the release date of 25/October. Or 22/October with the Digital Deluxe edition.

Star Wars Outlaws. The trailer teased quite a bit, including the appearance of Lando Calrissian. This trailer was pretty much a warm up for what’s to come at the Ubisoft Forward on Monday, so there’s not too much more to say about it. I don’t need much convincing with this one, but I’ll take another load of information anyway. So bring it on, Ubisoft Forward!

Away from my cores, there really wasn’t much interesting me. Except for the fact there’s an Among Us TV series being developed. I love those beans, and they’re greatly represented in this animation style. I’ll keep my eye out for it. And speaking of beans, Killer Bean. No, it’s not a dark, twisted Mr Bean special where he goes on a killing spree, but a roguelike game that stars a literal bean. It seems like it’ll be fun, so I’ll be keeping my eye on it.

Though there wasn’t too much interesting me from Summer Game Fest, I’m happy with the games that did. Even if most were already known entities, seeing more of them is always welcome. Now, time to look through the other events that happened while I was sleeping and update the waiting for list.
