From slick shots to roostin’ shootin’ during this Tiny Teams. Released the day Tiny Teams started, Rusty Rex unleashes Deadliest Pigeon on the world. This sidescroller action game is pretty much non-stop action, utilising many guns to wreak destruction upon anyone who gets in this pigeon’s path. Thanks to Yogscast Games, I got a code to go rampaging as the Deadliest Pigeon.
At a park, a pigeon has just welcomed a newborn chick into the world. The two enjoy the seesaw, but then a hunter and his dog arrives. Before the pigeon could get the little one to safety, the dog had ate it. Traumatised, the pigeon does the only thing that makes any sense. Lights a cigar and gets ready to take on the world in the most destructive act of revenge.
Controlling the pigeon is easy, with the game using a dual stick control scheme for moving and shooting when on a controller. The left stick moves the pigeon around, with the right for aiming the guns. There is a laser sight on all guns, which makes it very easy to line up a shot and start blasting some heads off. Any gun that an enemy drops can be picked up, with there being a good variety to use.

The standard pistols, rifles, and shotguns are here. Along with a flamethrower, minigun, rocket launcher, and even a chainsaw. There can be enemies that don’t use a weapon, such as dogs and zombies. Yeah, while this pigeon wages a war on the world, the world is already fighting one. And it’s not just zombies, either. Aliens have also found their way into the fight. Mutants, too. While taking them all out might seem easy, it is possible to run out of bullets.
Of course, these weapons do have a weight to them, which will reduce the pigeon’s maximum flight stamina. The heavy weapons might cause massive damage, but mobility becomes a slight issue. The pigeon’s health can easily be depleted if suddenly grounded. Defeated enemies can sometimes drop food, which will restore that health, though losing health simply restores me back to the last checkpoint with the weapon I had when I passed it.
The levels offer variety, with caverns, cliffs, facilities, a carnival, and even a club ending up as battlegrounds. There’s nothing too tricky when it comes to navigation, with open areas possible to breeze through. The same can be said for the narrow areas, too. Although there will be a lot more gunfire, storming through enemies like Rambo. At certain points, giant enemies block the way. These enemies have a lot of health, which can empty a weapon of all its bullets easily. Fortunately, an extra weapon will be close by should it be needed.
Deadliest Pigeon is a superb time. Though short at around two hours, the action is non-stop. Always moving, swapping between the many weapon types, blasting anyone who gets in the way. While there can be tricky parts, this is in no way a difficult game. But that’s not a detriment, either. Since it absolutely captures the feeling of being a one-man… uh… pigeon army. And for that, I give it an easy recommendation.
Deadliest Pigeon is part of this year’s Tiny Teams, a week-long festival of celebrating games from small studios. With sales on games already released, new games and major updates for games releasing, and demos for games yet to release. Running all week from 6-13/August, check the Tiny Teams page on Steam, and maybe you will find a new favourite game from one of many small studios.
