At first, I was just going to be watching this to see if anything caught my eye. And things within it certainly did. But there was one big thing that got teased a few days before that really got my attention. And then a second. We’d finally be getting a new trailer for LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, which would bring with it a better look at this game. And then, the trailer for the Saints Row reboot – which is what started the event off.
That Saints Row trailer offered a look into these characters we’ll be fighting beside and the gangs they’ll be going up against, along with a look at the location we’ll be doing all this in. The CG trailer certainly had the thrill, with the small snippets of gameplay that followed showing just some of the chaos we’ll be getting involved with. This is said to be the biggest and best Saints Row experience, where we’ll become the future boss of The Saints as we build our empire across the streets of Santo Ileso. And the best news is that it arrives in February. Clearly a case of holding it back until it’s ready.
Other highlights for me included a reveal of the brilliant Park Beyond. It’s Thrillville, but crazier. Well, in terms of the rollercoasters, at least. We’ll be park manager, helping to invent wacky new setpieces for these rides. But it’s not just the rollercoasters we’ll be reinventing. The trailer shows off a Merry-Go-Round that transforms itself into a triple-tiered tower, a ferris wheel that becomes a multi-wheeled spectacle, and an octopus ride that dunks the cabin passengers ride in into a pool while presumably swinging them around in a random pattern.
There’s still plenty we don’t know about the game, however. While live-reacting on the GRcade Twitchcast, I was speculating whether the game would allow us to get a ground-level view and allow us to explore and ride our parks much the same as Thrillville allowed. There’s also whether we have just the one area in which to create this park with and how extensive the customisation options will be. I’m sure we’ll be finding out more next year, which is when it will be releasing.
Jurassic World Evolution 2 had a bit more shown off for it and an exact date revealed. I still haven’t got around to the first one, so I’ll more than likely just settle for making this second one my first experience of dinosaur park management. Riders Republic has an open beta out right now for anyone who wants to try it. I know I’m going to get it, so I won’t be jumping in. Super Monkey Ball: Banana Mania had all of the party games that will be within it revealed, along with another crossover character in Morgana from the Persona series. There’s sure to be plenty to love about this Monkey Ball, that’s for sure.
Another big reveal that caught my eye is DokeV, a creature-collecting game that is pretty wacky in terms of just what it includes. At first, it looked like some kind of extreme sports game, as it showed off a few methods of traversal, such as a bike, skateboard and… umbrella, but then it revealed the creatures that we’ll be fighting and presumably collecting. Those battles look insanely flashy, which does fit the theme that these creatures are powered by and encourage the dreams of humans they live alongside.
Those creatures look varied, the world looks amazing, and we’ll be fighting alongside our Dokebi friends in the battles we face, so customisation of our player character is certainly a given. While it is going to be a sprawling open world adventure, Pearl Abyss have made sure to note that this game is not an MMO. Sure, there’ll hopefully be some sort of multiplayer action, but this definitely won’t be a cartoony version of Black Desert Online. There’s no date, so it seems unlikely it’ll be arriving next year, but when it does, it’ll be a great game to get stuck into.
There were other games that looked fun here, such as Cult of the Lamb – a life sim where you build a cult greater than any other in the world full of dark magic to repay a debt to the one who saved you from execution by possessing you. It’s certainly an interesting take on the setting for such a game, and one I am interested in giving a go.
When the LEGO Star Wars logo appeared on those screens behind Keighley around an hour in to the event, I knew I was in for a treat. And that trailer honestly delivered. It delivered everything I had been expecting of this game. The beautiful open worlds. A look at various mechanics of the game. More scenes we can expect to play through during each Episode. It just had me unable to speak marvelling at everything going on. During the Twitchcast, I was just unable to properly speak until it was over. There was just so much raw joy at what I was seeing.
The detail TT Games have gone into with this game is truly amazing. The humour is great, the combat looks ace – with plenty of options for attacking and defending, starfighter control seems to give us a lot of freedom. There’s just so much I could talk about with this one. And I am. Just not in this article. Later on today or tomorrow, there will be another article looking into The Skywalker Saga by analysing this new trailer for the things I most loved about it. So keep an eye out for that.
For two hours, there was a lot here. It was a fun time to be watching it live and seeing everything revealed. Even the things that weren’t to my taste (why the hell would you show off Call of Duty with the tutorial level?) at least held some entertainment value through reacting to them as part of the Twitchcast.
While my fanciful hope of a past, present, and future of GTA segment that revealed the GTA Trilogy Remake, showed off V Expanded and Enhanced, then just ended on a simple #GTAVI never happened, I’m still happy with everything I’ve seen from it. Could have done without the extended look at Death Stranding to end on – especially since it’s not really a new game, but it was to be expected.
