If 2024 had a lot of games, 2025 is going to be so packed with them. The Switch successor is coming this year, and I’m sure Nintendo will want it to have just as strong a start as the Switch did in 2017. Alongside that, some of Microsoft’s known entities are sure to be coming this year, and my core franchises have quite a bit to be enjoying. I’m so ready to dive in.

Aspyr are still going strong with their classic Star Wars remasters, with Jedi Power Battles lined up for this month. But when there’s usually two per year, what else could we be getting from them this year? There’s plenty of classics still to pull from, including bringing the second Force Unleashed over. Or what about other GameCube era games, such as 2002’s The Clone Wars? Whatever the choice is, I’m hoping it’ll be a good one.

Of course, there’s more than just classic games on modern systems to look forward to. But modern Star Wars games are a bit elusive this year. Outlaws will release its second expansion. And then… I guess Celebration will reveal all, whether that be something from Respawn, Skydance New Media’s project, or the Knights of the Old Republic remake. Maybe Eclipse makes a surprise appearance? Or perhaps a mobile game.

Announced at The Game Awards was Sonic Racing CrossWorlds, with a suspiciously familiar effect on its logo. Almost like the Paradox Prism of Sonic Prime. While I don’t expect it to actually be tied to the series, the multiverse idea for tracks is a fun one to think about. Or maybe it’s not so exciting as swapping between multiverses in a race, with them instead just being separate tracks. Though the tagline mentioning traversing through space and time has me thinking it could easily be happening.

Coming this year after being announced last Pokémon Day, Legends: Z-A brings its Kalos-based adventure some time in the year. There’s been absolutely nothing on this since that announcement, so speculation has been very slim. Hopefully the Pokémon Presents of this year will shine a lot more light on what this is, and whether Nintendo Paris were correct with their statement that it would take place entirely within Lumiose City. It would make for a very interesting Pokémon adventure if that were true.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rita’s Rewind released last month, providing a new game for fans to enjoy. What is to follow is anyone’s guess, but I would hope a small expansion can arrive soon. It seems unlikely any new games would be arriving so soon, but maybe this is the start of a resurgence of Power Rangers games. While it is very unlikely to happen, with the number of collections bringing old games to new platforms, could Power Rangers see the same with some of its games from across the years?

Square Enix announced that the first three Dragon Quest games would be remade in the HD-2D style last year, with the third game also releasing late last year. In playing it, and completing it, I was excited to get to the first two games, coming together as Dragon Quest I + II HD-2D Remake. It’s going to be fun playing through more classic Dragon Quest, and seeing the remainder of this trilogy’s story.

From a classic RPG to a modern one, Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time is looking an interesting one. A sequel to the 2012 3DS game, the player character takes on jobs – known here as lives – to improve skills relating to it. That will then help in the adventures outside of the town. Though it has been delayed numerous times, Level-5 is confident that 2025 will be the year it releases.

It took me a while to get into Xenoblade Chronicles, with its DnD, pseudo-turn-based combat. The third game’s story is what kept me with it, and so with the announcement of a remaster of the Wii U’s Xenoblade Chronicles X, I can finally try a game that interested me many years ago. Separated from the main series, it focuses on exploration of an open world as the organisation BLADE protect the human survivors living on Mira. I’m ready for this massive undertaking to be one of the last I play on the Switch.

Moving to games I’ll be playing on the Xbox, it feels about time to see something on Fable. Especially if it is meant to be one of the games for this year’s Microsoft Game Studios output. I’m hoping it can replicate what made the old games so great, providing a new tale in Albion. An Albion which I hope has been greatly expanded while not losing what made it fun to traverse. I’m sure that if a Developer Direct happens, this will be one of the games featured.

A game close to releasing that I’ll be playing on the Series S is Rebellion’s Atomfall. Depicting the Lake District of the UK, this is an alternate version of 1957, where the Windscale fire had disastrous effects. Much of the Lake District is in radioactive fallout, with quarantine zones set up throughout. It is in one of these that the adventure takes place. I could be biased in why I want this, but it looks to be a great game. Which just means exploring another game set in the UK is sure to be a delight.

It has to be here. Of course it does. GTA VI. Rockstar is set to deliver another fantastic world to explore with the fictional Leonida state. Home of Vice City. Assuming it doesn’t get delayed into 2026, this will be one of the greatest games of 2025 for sure. Alongside its huge open world to explore, there will be a story focused on two partners in crime that is sure to be a fun one to run through. Plenty of characters to meet. I will be lost to this one for a long time, I feel.

A Nintendo Switch takes centre stage with Mario revealing himself from behind a curtain. Around the outside are images of many other franchises.

And now we enter large realms of speculation. The Switch successor. Known to be announced before the end of March, leaks have seemingly revealed how the console looks. Officially, there’s nothing. Which just makes it all the more exciting waiting for when that announcement comes. I feel it will come this month, as this is the month the Switch got its massive info blowout in 2017. The successor can easily be revealed with such an info blowout, skipping the concept trailer the Switch got.

But what games will be revealed? What could Nintendo have for the first year of this new console? At launch, much like other console launches, I see a large game and a small one coming from them. While I couldn’t guess what the small one will be, there’s no question as to what that large game will be. Mario. We’ve been waiting for a new 3D Mario for so long. Besides, there’s been so much Mario across the last year, it would be weird to stop now.

Close to launch, I see a new Mario Kart. Nintendo knows that one will sell, no matter when it releases. But as seen with the Switch, as close as possible to a console launch gives so much room for sales across the life of it. I’m also expecting Kirby to be around near the end of the first year with a new 3D adventure. There’s so much I could speculate on with it, an entire article could be filled. Maybe when it’s announced I’ll do so.

With all that, 2025 is looking to be one of the best year for gaming in quite a number of years. Even without GTA VI. There’s so much I haven’t talked about, after all. Including a number of games I’m not entirely sure will be coming this year. Whatever happens, there will be plenty of articles about those games I experience across this year. And maybe a few I’m experiencing again.
