The summer showcase of the Future Games Show didn’t let up at all, with a lot of games shown off across its 90-minute runtime. With an Unreal Engine 5 reel showing off the future of what games can be near the end of it, this showcase had already done that with a few previous games.

Resistor was one of the first games shown, described as a post-apocalyptic CaR-PG. This vehicular RPG sees players competing in a death race tournament in the hopes of winning, gaining citizenship to one of the last remaining urban metropolises. The races are crazy, with an open world to explore when not racing to help forge connections and build a crew to improve your racing ability.

This very much looks like a concept I’d crafted on a potentially smaller scale. Which is why I’m so excited to play it. As something I’ve been dreaming of for quite a number of years, seeing the core of the idea in action will be divine. I’m sure developer Long Way Home will have a great first hit on their hands.

Within the desert wastes on a tarmac road, vehicles with jet engines speed into the distance, with one having exploded and trailing smoke as it continues down the road.

Sticking with vehicles on the ground, The Precinct sees players take on the role of a cop in the 80s. This crime sandbox game has plenty of chases and shootouts throughout Averno City, which is full of gangs vying for power. Procedurally generated crimes will arise for you to put a stop to as you unravel the mystery of your father’s killer. It looks like there will be a lot to investigate with this second crime sandbox from Fallen Tree Games.

From on the ground to the void of space, but in a truck? Yes, this mad reimagining of the truck sim genre has players star truckin’ across the universe in their own big rig with jet engines. Exploring a retro-futuristic Americana-styled galaxy, Star Trucker tasks players with hauling cargo from system to system, with an ever-changing galactic economy to try your hand at freelance trading. Whether legit goods or otherwise.

It’s very much sounding like Elite: Dangerous with space-faring trucks, which I am all for. From the trailer, there are many interesting locales players will travel through – including what looks to be a galactic junkyard. How will the rules of the road be treated when there are no roads? I’m sure developer Monster and Monster have thought of that.

A Wallace and Gromit VR experience is coming soon! The Grand Getaway will feature the inventive duo in a holiday mix-up. The rocket they use takes them on a space-faring adventure, crash landing onto the surface of an unusual planet. Seems we’ll be helping the two repair the rocket and get back home, potentially meeting strange new characters who call this planet home. Aardman are sure onto a winner here with this co-production with Atlas V.

The SteamWorld franchise is getting another entry, but this time not under the original developer of Image & Form. The action-adventure series is also taking on a new genre. A construction and management simulation game, SteamWorld Build sees players building up a town, utilising the mine it is built on top of to gather resources. Expansion and happiness of the town are key in going deeper down the mine for ever-grander resources.

Of course, this mine isn’t free for the picking, so the townsfolk down there will need protecting from the dangers that will attack. While I have yet to dive into any of the SteamWorld franchise, I’ve had an interest in it since Dig first released back in 2013. This one by The Station sure has me wanting to make it my first, and there’s a demo to try it before it releases some time this year. Time for a first impressions article, maybe?

Riding a blue quadruped dinosaur, the player character tiles the ground while a blue bipedal dinosaur rests in the background in its pen.

This next one drew me in for just one reason. Dinosaurs. Summer Game Fest presented me with a fusion of magic and farming. Now this event has given me a fusion of dinosaurs and farming. Paleo Pines sees players create a character, head into the wilds to tame some dinos, and use them to help grow a ranch where people and dinosaurs co-exist. From what is seen in the trailer, it looks like developer Italic Pig will be delivering a roarsome ranching game later this year.

This last one I’ve had my eye on for some time. If Resistor is delivering my open world racing RPG dreams, Life by You is delivering what looks to be the ultimate life simulator. And creation game. Be in control of the people you create, explore the towns you craft, and enjoy the stories that evolve day-by-day through interaction with this world.

At this Future Games Show, developer Paradox Tectonic gave a recap of what the game was. They also showed off footage of the player interacting with one of the jobs available in the game. These jobs involve the player, having them complete tasks to drive job productivity. In September, Life by You will start its Early Access journey, offering up its creation tools to the world.

I was surprised by the number of games I was invested in with this event. Two dream games that I’ve waited years to become reality, and a bunch of others that fit into my likes. I wonder what unique farming simulators Microsoft and Ubisoft will present in the next two days? After all, they’re pretty common it seems.
