The first event of this gaming celebration has now finished. Summer Game Fest’s Kick Off Live had some good stuff within it. A few surprises, but only a few things I could truly see myself being invested in. Along with the games were a few live performances, and these I did enjoy. Weezer’s new song has a great feel to it, and it’s released today, with Wave Break – the game the song will be featured in – releasing tomorrow.

What can I say about Wave Break? It looks fun. It’s pretty much Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater, but with boats and guns. With its Miami Vice stylings and vibrant visuals, there’s a lot of maps to go wild on that are all varied in design. The game has a storyline that pits you against others in a crime-filled plot, competing against the AI – or friends in the multiplayer modes – to come out on top. I’m certainly going to be enjoying this tomorrow.

One of the songs from the game Sable was performed live by Japanese Breakfast – which sounded lovely. The game also looks lovely, with a visual style that has a very hand-drawn quality to it. I suppose comic book style would be better suited to describe it. This is the first I’ve seen of the game, and it seems like it’d be a good world to explore. I’ll be keeping an eye out for more on it, as it got me invested in seeing how it turns out.

While no other announcement accompanied it, a preview of the Sonic Symphony event happening later in the month appeared, with a medley of music from Sonic Unleashed. Oh, how I loved it. It’s got me wanting to listen to everything that will be there right now. Rooftop Run has never sounded so majestic, and while it faded out before it could fully kick in, the Dark Gaia Phase 2 fight theme sounded just as great.

Shown within this event was a movie that constructs a video game world. Named Free Guy, the premise is an NPC being gifted the ability of knowing that he is within a video game, using that new-found discovery to become the hero of said video game. The trailer had some fun moments within it, and it looks as though things get serious fast. I’ll be interested in seeing it sometime, but it’s not something I’m going to as soon as it releases.

Two Point Campus had a trailer shown, giving an overview of the game, but it didn’t feel like anything new came from it – having only recently been announced [Update: Very much remembered that wrong. It had been leaked, not revealed, a week earlier]. Much like Two Point Hospital before it, we’ll be managing a business and progressing through levels to unlock more stuff. This is on the unique side of business management games, since the go-to is usually theme parks. I enjoyed Two Point Hospital, so I’ll be getting on this at the first opportunity.

It seemed obvious what was going to be announced when Jeff Goldblum appeared, and sure enough it was Jurassic World Evolution 2. With Frontier Developments working this one, I’m confident it will be great. While I’ve kept an eye on the first, I haven’t played it myself. With this announcement, I do intend to. I really don’t know why I never did so sooner.

The last thing of note for me was the revival of Metal Slug. I’m not invested in the series, but it had a distinctly Advance Wars style from the trailer, which seems fitting when this new game is a tactical strategy game. Metal Slug Tactics seems full of the 90s charm, which easily won me over. This is another I’ll be keeping an eye on, as I could do with a new tactical strategy game to play.

It was a fun event to watch, with a lot of reveals. This lot I’ve talked of are those that are of interest to me. Other things were interesting, but not of interest to me. Vampire: The Masquerade: Blood Hunt had a pretty good trailer, but it’s not something I’m invested in at all. Could I try it? Sure, and I will be interested to see new things on it, but it’s not a priority.

Future events will see me talking only of those things I’m invested in. No longer will I be recapping entire events before getting to that stuff. You’ll see that when it comes to the Xbox and Bethesda Showcase on Sunday, which will be the next event I’ll be covering here. Unless something in the next two days catches my interest.
